Overview of Omega-3
Omega-3 fatty acids are Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) that we need for many health reasons. For example, omega-3s have been known to improve brain function, protect the heart, provide anti-inflammatory properties. Omega-3s can improve symptoms in a wide range of conditions.
Most people consume too many omega-6s and not enough omega-3 fatty acids. A lack of fatty acids can show in various skin problems like eczema, dry skin, alligator skin, and cracked skin on heels or fingertips.
Where can you consume more omega-3s?
Fish are a good source but there is the problem of mercury and PCBs. Mercury is toxic and high exposures to inorganic mercury can lead to skin rashes and dermatitis.
The best source for omega-3s is cod liver oil or fish oil. These oils are processed so that they’re free of detectable amounts of mercury, PCBs, and other contaminants. These oils contain EPA (EicosoPentaenoic Acid) and DHA (DocosaHexanoic Acid). I take capsules daily but I’ve heard that the liquid form is better as it’s more concentrated.
